Dexter Wayne Smith

Dexter Wayne Smith, 51, of Dewey, passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023. Dexter was born on November 9, 1971 in Bartlesville, OK to Charles Eldon “Charlie” Smith and Kathleen Sue “Kathy” (Swanson) Smith. He graduated from Dewey High School in 1990 and continued his education at Oklahoma State University where he thoroughly enjoyed his time and friends, eventually graduating with his degree in Business and Marketing. He was always a fun-loving guy and jokingly stated on his college graduation announcements that “after 12 long years, he was finally graduating”. Dexter was always at the top of his class in high school and loved playing football for the Dewey Bulldoggers. Being extremely intelligent, he never had to work hard at his grades, which drove his sister crazy as she was always trying to make sure he made it to class on time at OSU. Janette was fortunate enough to be able to room with him and his best friend, Don Davis, her first year at OSU. Dexter enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dad around Oklahoma and in Colorado. After Janette’s graduation from OSU, he and Charlie made sure that the three of them took a fishing trip to Port Lavaca and Port Aransas, Texas before she could start her first “adult-career” job. It was one of his favorite trips, to be talked about to this day. At OSU, he made some really great life-long friends in Don Davis, Travis Ray, and Mike Trevino. Their escapades will be long remembered. Not only were they his “brothers”, but they became members of the Smith and Swanson families as well. Dexter loved all of his family. After moving back to Dewey a few years ago to live and care for his mother, he quickly became her best friend. He always wanted to see his nieces and enjoyed following them in all their sports and was the best uncle, playing silly games each time they were together. He could always make you laugh. Dexter was preceded in death by his father, three sets of grandparents, three uncles, three aunts, and a nephew/cousin. He is survived by his mother, his sister Janette Herren and her husband Casey, his nieces Chanley and Landry Herren, his step-mother TJ Smith-Magana, siblings/cousins Justin Smith and Rebecca Smith-Likens and their families, and multiple aunts, uncles, and cousins.
