James "Jim" Ivan Scherman

James “Jim” Ivan Scherman, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 21, 2026 with his family by his side. Jim was born July 7, 1950 to Ernest Sr. and Anna Bell Scherman in Olathe, Kansas, and was raised in Paola, Kansas, alongside his brother and sisters. After graduating from high school, Jim joined the United States Navy in 1969 and served until 1971. While stationed in Hawaii, he made two trips to Vietnam. After his military service, Jim returned to civilian life and built a career as an analytical engineer. Never one to stop learning or pursuing new adventures, he earned both his single-engine and multi-engine pilot’s licenses. His work with Phillips took him and his family to England, Evansville Indiana, and eventually back to Bartlesville, where he married his love, Kim Scherman. Work later took them to Holly, Michigan, where Jim became deeply involved in the community. Jim lived life with curiosity, determination, and a true sense of adventure. He loved sailing, flying, riding motorcycles, and woodworking. He was especially proud of completing an Iron Butt Association ride, traveling 1,150 miles on his motorcycle in just 24 hours. He was also proud to serve his community after being elected to the Holly Village Council. Jim became involved with the Holly Historical Society and the restoration of the Holly Depot. He loved working with his hands and took great pride in the projects he tackled. One of his most memorable labors of love was transforming their 200-year-old home into a dollhouse for his wife. He even made all 209 pickets for the white picket fence by hand. If something was broken, Jim could fix it. Following a stroke in 2006, Jim and Kim returned to Bartlesville to be closer to family. Though his life changed, Jim remained surrounded by the people who loved him. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Sr. and Anna Bell Scherman, and his sister, Ann Marie. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 33 years, Kim Scherman; his brother, Ernest Jr., and his wife, Connie Scherman; his sister, Mary Elizabeth Bradshaw; his daughter, Lori, and her husband, Cliff Fitzgerald; his son, Rob, and his wife, Ginger Scherman; and his son, Jeremy Scherman, and his wife, Kristy Bowers. He was also a proud grandfather to Alex Wade, Colton Fitzgerald, Chloe Scherman, Callie Scherman, Rafe Owens, Haley Fulton, Larkin Owens, Anastasia Scherman, Gabriel Scherman, and Ezra Scherman. He is also survived by his goddaughter, Sonia Scherman; Venessa Udell; and a great-grandson who is expected later in the year. Jim will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his quick ability to fix just about anything, his love of history and community, and, most of all, the love he had for his family. His life was full of journeys—across oceans, through the skies, along open roads, and alongside the people he loved. He leaves behind countless memories and a legacy that will continue through those who knew and loved him. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, October 16 at Tuxedo Church with Pastor Tony Wisdom officiating.
