Mrs. Kathryn S. Peters

Kathryn Shenk Peters Kathryn S. (Katie) Peters, 92, longtime owner of Peters Dry Goods and Hardware, died Friday in Dewey. Katie was born the only child of Victor and Emma Jane (Claybaugh) Shenk in Tulsa, OK, on September 8, 1921. She grew up Tulsa and received her education in the Tulsa Public Schools where she attended Kendall Grade School, Will Rogers Junior High School and graduated with the Senior Class of 1938 from Tulsa Central High School. Katie furthered her education at the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in business in 1942. Katie was united in marriage with Melvin William Peters on September 20, 1940, in Oklahoma City. Melvin and Katie made their home in Dewey and were owners and partners with Clarence and Ruthalene Peters in the Peters Corporation, which operated eight clothing stores, two hardware stores and three grocery stores in northeast Oklahoma including Peters Hardware and Peters Dry Goods in Dewey and Bartlesville. Peters Hardware has been a downtown Dewey landmark since 1917. After 52 years of marriage, Melvin preceded her in death on June 29, 1993. Katie was an avid OU football fan, and she and Melvin were season ticketholders for years. She was an accomplished bridge player and enjoyed playing duplicate bridge. Katie also played golf and was a member of the Hillcrest Country Club. She and Melvin enjoyed traveling within and outside the country, visiting Australia, Europe, China and Africa, as well as taking several cruises. Katie loved her family and time spent with her grandkids and great-grandkids. Katie is survived by her two children Pat Hopkins of Dewey, and Leroy Peters and Joyce of Moore, OK; six grandchildren April Peters, Lee Peters, Heather Peters, Kevin Peters, Chris Knisley and Melvin Offutt; numerous great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Melvin, her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Ruthalene Peters. Katie’s family will receive friends at the Davis Family Funeral Home, (918-534-3030), 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey, on Thursday, October 10, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.DavisFamilyFuneralHome.com. Life Celebration Services for Mrs. Peters will be held Friday, October 11, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Dewey United Methodist Church. Rev. Dale Durnell with the Dewey United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Family Funeral Home.
