Jewel Deane Gibson, age 87, passed away on September 26, 2016 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 29th, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Wages & Sons Funeral Home (1031 Lawrenceville Highway, Lawrenceville, GA). The funeral service will be held Friday, September 30th, at 12:00 noon at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (3323 New Hope Road at the corner of New Hope and Cammie Wages in Dacula, GA). Jewel was born in Starkville, Mississippi on January 9, 1929. She graduated from Aliceville High School in Pickens County, AL before attending the University of Texas in Austin, TX. Jewel met Urban Edmond Gibson in a physics class. They were married several years later on June 1, 1957. When Urban graduated in 1960, they moved their small family to Irving, Texas where they happily resided for the next 25 years until Urban’s passing in January of 1983. Shortly after Charlton (their fourth child) was born in 1965, Jewel re-entered the work force as a computer programmer for Vought Corporation (formerly known as LTV). While working there, she returned to college at the University of Texas at Arlington and finished a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. She retired from Vought as the Manager of Computer Education in 1992. Jewel was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She enjoyed directing roadshows, organizing speech festivals, and teaching Gospel Doctrine and Relief Society classes. After retirement, she served two family history missions in Salt Lake City, UT. Jewel loved to learn, study the scriptures, research family history, and share her testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Urban Edmond Gibson; her father, Curtis Edgar Haggard; her mother, Lillie Delilah Avant Haggard; one brother, Shellie Merrill Haggard; and three sisters, Emma Marguerite Johnson, Lillian Deloris Stokes, and Barbara Marie Elmore. Jewel is survived by her sister, Willie Marvine Windle of Virginia Beach, VA; two daughters, Kay Dawn Dortch of Birmingham, AL and Barbara Deanne Beaton (Bradford) of Suwanee, GA; two sons, Kenneth Urban Gibson (Ann Marie) of South Jordan, UT and Charlton Edmond Gibson of Metter, GA; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Pallbearers are Kenneth Urban Gibson, Charlton Edmond Gibson, Bradford Powers Beaton, Michael Beaton, Joshua James Beaton, and Stanley Brice Dortch. Though Jewel will be missed, we rejoice that she is now free of pain and reunited with her husband after 33 years. Families are forever.
