Vivian Elizabeth Waters

November 8, 1920 - December 20, 2019

Vivian Elizabeth Waters, lifelong area citizen and Barnsdall resident, died Friday in Barnsdall. Vivian loved life and lived to the fullest, and she had just celebrated her 99th birthday, surrounded by the people she loved and who loved her. Vivian was born the daughter of Edgar Otis and Thelma Triva (Crumrine) Webb on November 8, 1920. in Pawhuska, OK. Growing up she had fond memories of swinging on Grandpa’s swing and hearing him play the violin, hoping one day she would also play the violin. In 1935 Vivian united in marriage with Hiram Cox and they made their home in Pawhuska where they raised four children. During WWII they went out to California to support the war effort. Vivian was one of the famous Rosie the Riveters that enabled the United States to prevail in winning the war. When the children were young the family loved camping out by the Caney river and water skiing at Sunset Lake. Vivian loved swimming and swam regularly up until her 95th birthday! One fond memory of mom shared by Sandra was of mom loading up her girlfriends and taking them to see Elvis in concert in Tulsa. Road trips were so much fun, and the family drove many times back and forth to California to visit Grandma Lillian. Vivian was an adventurous spirit and she traveled extensively through the United States, most recently taking one last trip to the beach on South Padre Island. When she wasn’t travelling, Vivian played bingo, went fishing and enjoyed her many grandchildren’s sporting and school activities. Just last week she attended a basketball game in Bartlesville. She was an avid sports fan who watched OU and OSU football and the Dallas Cowboys. For the past several years she never passed up an opportunity to help deliver flowers for the Barnsdall Flower Shop because she loved people and being around everyone. Vivian’s zest for life was unmatched and she will be dearly missed. Vivian is survived by three daughters, Sandra Cox, Sue Meiler, and Treva Scully and husband Jim, all of Barnsdall; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and seven great great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, one son Gary Cox, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 28, at the Cornerstone Community Church in Barnsdall, with Rev. Jimmy Hatfield officiating. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home – Walker Brown Chapel. Online condolences and remembrances may be shared at www.DavisFamilyFuneralHome.com.
