Danny Dwight Cowart

Danny Dwight Cowart, 80, of Wann, Oklahoma, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2026, in Tulsa. Danny was born in Ada Oklahoma February 6, 1946, to George Washington Cowart and Delores Arlene (Basden) Cowart. He was the third of four children. He grew up in an automotive rich environment and loved working on cars. His father worked for a number of automotive dealerships and eventually owned his own shop, and Danny worked many hours there. Danny married his high school sweetheart, Patricia May Hampton, on November 6, 1964. He had a small yellow ribbon from one of their early dates that he kept in the truck for almost 35 years. They were married 51 years until her passing in 2015. She was the love of his life. At some point before having kids they moved up to Illinois, so Danny could work at the Caterpillar plant with a few of what became lifelong friends. They eventually moved back to Ada so he could pursue higher education, and he received his bachelor’s degree from East Central University in 1972 with a Major in Industrial Arts and Minor in Math. He then moved his family to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to begin teaching Industrial Arts, first at Madison then moved over to Sooner High School to teach manual drafting. He went back to East Central and received his master’s degree in education in 1977. After departing the public school system, he moved on to teach at Tri County Technology Center in 1985, where he brought forth one of the best Computer Aided Drafting programs in the state. He retired from teaching in 2009 after 37 years. During his early teaching career, he liked to stay busy, so he had a couple of businesses on the side, Cowart Construction, Design Graphics Inc. and Drafting Technology Services Inc. In 1992 they moved out to the country house, both his wife’s and his retirement dream, where he lived the last 34 years of his life on 16 Acres southeast of Copan, Oklahoma. As he described it, 4 miles from Dewey, 4 miles from Copan and 4 miles from Wann. He loved sitting on the porch or in the shop with a barn cat, usually Bullet, sometimes Sadie, sitting on his lap, just listening to the world. Danny also had a dog named Anvil. He was just a pup full of ticks when he walked up during a blacksmith meeting. He was named Anvil because Danny sold an anvil at that meeting and that was the exact cost at the vet to get Anvil checked out. Danny had numerous hobbies, including woodworking of all complexities, from building small toys and puzzles up to rebuilding homes. Very rarely did he get something store bought if he could make it. Rebuilding antique Lawyers bookcases is one that comes to mind, several coat/hat racks and cedar chests. He got mad about not having enough storage in the house and built a drawer system across one wall of the bedroom. Woodworking of all kinds came easy to him. Danny also spent time working on cars/motors/tools, etc. This was something he instilled in his children. His kids never knew what a repairman was. If it broke, they fixed it. Danny enjoyed gardening and growing things in general and just being outdoors. Camping and canoe trips were always on his mind. He always enjoyed staying at the cabins at Osage Hills State Park. He and his family once nursed a squirrel pup (Bigfoot) back to health and gave it to Madison Jr. High to grow up in the indoor/outdoor areas they had there. In recent years he had gotten himself into beekeeping and you could tell he rather enjoyed it. Metalworking was something he shared with James. They love the precision of it, the ability to make what is needed and desired. Blacksmithing came late, around 2000 or so. It was something he and Tracy shared, again it was the ability to make from scratch what you needed or wanted from what was available. All of these things just show his desire to create and maintain things, beautiful things. He had a great mind for designing and the ability to make it, as well. The things he has made will be cherished for many years to come. Danny was a problem solver, something he passed on to not just his kids but almost everyone that interacted with him. He would always say, “Work the problem,” meaning break it down to what you can fix then move to the next piece. Above all was the teaching… It never stopped… Danny is survived by two sons, George “Tracy” Cowart and wife Tamitha, and James Wade Cowart and wife Deanna; two sisters, Georgia Sampson and husband Lloyd, and Becky Blackburn and husband Steve; six grandchildren, Tyler Cowart, Danielle duke, Ashton House and husband Ike, Corey Cowart, Blaine Peoples and wife Amanda, and Kasidy Peoples; and one great-grandchild, Rosalie. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia Cowart; his parents, George and Delores Cowart; and a sister, Glenna Cowart.
