Elmo "BJ" Harvey Johnson Jr.

Elmo “BJ” Harvey Johnson Jr., 70, of Dewey, left this earth on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, and is now fishing and playing sports in heaven. BJ was born July 20, 1955, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to Elmo Harvey Johnson Sr. and Juanita U. (Ringer) Johnson. He attended Dewey Public Schools, graduating from Dewey High School in 1973. Beginning in his high school years, BJ worked for Reda Pump for many years. Later, he worked for Spears from the late 1980s to 2008. He then worked from 2008 to 2009 as a ranch hand in Roosevelt, Texas. He came back to Oklahoma and worked at the Renaissance Hotel in Tulsa from 2010 to 2014 as a maintenance engineer. BJ played football and baseball during his high school years, and he developed a love for sports throughout his life. He was a huge OU fan. Boomer Sooner! BJ’s passion for sports was shared with his children, CJ and Callie, as he served as assistant coach for much of their childhood. In addition to serving as assistant coach for Copan Public Schools from 2004-2008, BJ also was assistant coach for YMCA football and Blazer softball. He also ran the game clock at Dewey High School alongside Don Osborne, David Dodge, and David Chancelor. BJ married his sweetheart, Cheryl Ann Wilson, on September 3, 2010, in Miami, Oklahoma. This blessed BJ with three stepchildren and numerous grandchildren. He was a good family man. BJ also had a love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. Many people will remember him as a well-known fisherman in the area. He was a handyman and loved helping people. He was a good cook and made wonderful fried chicken, fried fish, and fried potatoes. The 4th of July was his favorite holiday and he loved watching fireworks. Oftentimes, when he was talking to someone on the phone, he would end the conversation with “I love you, bro.” He also liked to say, “‘I see,” said the blind man to his deaf daughter.’” Elmo enjoyed his time in nature, fishing, hunting, sports and gardening. He was a loving brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend. BJ is survived by his wife, Cheryl Johnson; two children, Carl “CJ” Johnson, and Callie Bauman and husband Matt; three stepchildren, Jayna Johnson and husband Branden, Amanda Guilfoyle, and Michael Rogers; a sister, Marilyn Jones and husband Nolan; a brother, Mickey Don Johnson; 17 grandchildren, Braylon Johnson, Lyla Johnson, Gunner Bauman, Anslee Bauman, Travis Sattler, Brayden Sattler, Abigail Balcer, Jackson Balcer, Jayme Guilfoyle, Jayce Guilfoyle, Sayde Guilfoyle, Kayde Guilfoyle, Maci Rogers, Jace Rogers, Gracie Rogers, Noah Rogers, and Zayden Rogers. He is preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles. BJ’s family will be hosting a family memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Dewey United Methodist Church.
