Joseph "Joe" Wayne Heyer

Joseph Wayne Heyer, 61, of Bartlesville, died Tuesday in Bartlesville. He leaves behind his earthly family and friends, but joins his Eternal Father and two siblings in heaven. Joseph, or Joe as he was known, was born the son of Charles Raymond and Joan Louise (McKee) Heyer on December 31, 1956, in Colorado Springs, CO. The family moved to Nowata, OK, in 1971 and Joe continued his education, graduating from the Nowata High School in 1975. During this time he received vocational training in construction. Joe remembered fondly one particular day when the class was traveling to the work site a little red car had gone off the road and the class stopped and was able to pick up the car and place it back on the road. Joe loved carpentry and became skilled in cabinetry. He built cabinets for family and made beautiful canes for those who needed them. One of his favorite employers was Charles Twist Construction where he not only worked but found time to fish with the boss. Later he went on to work for Superior Welding until a truck accident forced him to retire early. Joe accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior as a young man. From a tender age his family attended the Ochelata Camp Meetings where he became acquainted with Louise. Unfortunately he didn’t know her phone number and searched the phone book over for her father’s name not knowing how to spell Ickleberry correctly. He finally caught up with her one day at the local Safeway and as Louise says, it was love at first sight. Joe and Louise were united in marriage on February 19, 1981, and enjoyed nearly 37 years of loving marriage. Joe was a caring husband and father, not only to his children but to the many neighborhood kids as well. He took many a child on their first fishing trip and was always willing to wait just 15 more minutes to see if the fish would bite. Joe loved music and played the harmonica. He was a dreamer and a storyteller. He processed his own meat and loved to fire up his smoker. Joe loved the Lord and brought up his children to do the same. Through the years he was a faithful member of the Church of God Holiness Church family. Joe is survived by his loving wife Louise of the home; his parents Ray and Joan Heyer of Nowata; six children, Esther Heyer of Dewey, Rebekah Heyer of Bartlesville, Elizabeth Heyer of Dewey, Melinda Heyer of Dewey, Casey Heyer of Bartlesville and Grant Ratliff of Pooler, Georgia; two brothers, Danny Heyer and Cindy of Skiatook, and James Heyer and Karessa of Seneca, MO; two sisters, Rachel Heyer of Nowata, and Joy Boevers and Gary of Greenville, Ohio; sister in law Gail Heyer of Eolia, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by one brother Roger Heyer and one sister Lois Heyer. Visitation will be held on Friday from 10am - 8pm. Joe’s family will receive friends at the Davis Family Funeral Home, 918-534-3030, 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey, on Friday, January 19, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, at the Dewey First Baptist Church. Interment will be in the White Rose Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home.
