Mary Sue Haynes

Mary Sue Haynes, 68, of Nowata, joined her beloved husband in heaven on Saturday, June 29, 2024. She was born July 28, 1955, in Bartlesville, OK, to Kenneth Santmyer and Florence (Barnhart) (Santmyer) McGonigal. She attended school in Dewey and Nowata. Mary Sue married her soulmate and the love of her life James Haynes on July 27, 1974, at Nowata. The couple met through James’ sister, Sharon, and they easily fell in love. They were two peas in a pod and shared many interests, including helping others. The couple moved to Nowata in 1976 and have lived there ever since. Mary was a faithful pastor’s wife, as James pastored the Fountain of Life Church in Dewey, Oklahoma, where they served for more than 27 years. James also pastored for a number of years at Amazing Grace Tabernacle in Collinsville and he co-pastored Good Shepherd of Faith with Geraldine Haynes in Nowata. A mother to six boys, Mary Sue learned how to de-escalate arguments and serve as a referee. She was a wonderful mother and was fiercely loyal and loving to her family. She was a good listener, and her family was her favorite pastime. Her family has fond memories of her taking them to have pizza at the park. Some of her favorite activities included family dinners after church on Sundays. Mary Sue was the life of the party, always laughing and joking. She enjoyed puzzles, playing cards and board games. She also loved going the casino with her family and friends. Mary Sue was a great part of the community, having held numerous customer service jobs in the area, including working at gas stations and grocery stores. Everyone loved her. Mary Sue’s generosity knew no bounds. She is survived by her six sons, James Walter Haynes Jr., Mark Lindsey Haynes and wife Tammy, Jerry Bryer and wife Teresa, Terry Leon Bryer, Tony Haynes, and Phillip Haynes; three brothers, Tommy Guffey and wife Marilyn, Johnny Santmyer and wife Debbie, and Jimmy Santmyer and wife Morine; 23 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James Haynes; her parents, Kenneth and Florence Santmyer; stepfather, Samuel McGonigal; brother, William Guffey; and two sisters, Ellen Newman and Janet Dye. Mary Sue’s family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Davis Family Funeral Home – Dewey Chapel, 113 S. Osage Ave., Dewey, OK 74029, 918-534-3030. All day visitation will also be held that same day from 10-8. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the Fountain of Life Tabernacle in Dewey with the Reverend Teresa Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Nowata Relocated Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Davis Family Funeral Home – Dewey Chapel.
